What is a Low Flow Showerhead?

Showerhead

A showerhead is one of the most important appliances in any home, and it is important for homeowners to understand how this vital item operates. Showerheads come in a staggering variety of shapes, sizes and prices, and it can often be difficult to find the perfect showerhead for the home. Replacing a worn out showerhead with a shiny new model can result in more pleasant showers, more efficient hair washing and even substantial energy savings. As with any other home improvement project, it is important to shop around carefully before deciding on a particular showerhead model or design.

One of the most popular type of showerhead these days is the low flow showerhead, and one of its chief benefits is it energy saving potential. Homeowners who install low flow showerheads can often enjoy substantial savings on their energy bills without sacrificing enjoyable and energizing showers.

Low flow showerheads work by restricting the amount of water that comes through the showerhead, resulting in reduced water usage and lower energy bills. While the typical standard showerhead can use up to 10 gallons of water for every minute of use, a low flow showerhead can reduce water usage to 2 to 5 gallons per minute.

To the naked eye a low flow shower head will look just like a regular showerhead. The difference is that the low flow showerhead will include a built in flow restrictor. This flow restrictor will reduce the amount of water coming through the showerhead, resulting in lower water usage. In addition some low flow shower heads will also include a built in pulse feature. This handy feature will allow the water pressure to be increased if additional pressure is needed for a comfortable shower.
